As modern masters of global infrastructure and seasoned industry advisors, our commitment to people, planet, and performance is the foundation for all we put forth.
We are what the world is made of—we use renewable and repurposed raw materials to protect and extend the life of global infrastructure, for a more sustainable world.
Our services support critical infrastructure industries around the world. As trusted advisors with decades of proven success, we've seen it all, done it all, and are ready for whatever comes next.
Protecting what matters while preserving the future—guided by this purpose, the Koppers sustainability strategy focuses on three key pillars of people, planet, and performance.
At Koppers, we’re committed to operating our business in a way that ensures we are being good stewards of the environment, for generations to come. In 2023, we were proud to have achieved our greenhouse gas (GHG) target of a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to a 2007 baseline – seven years early. We achieved this milestone by increasing plant efficiency, retiring less efficient facilities, optimizing energy use, adopting lower-emission energy sources, and closely monitoring our emissions. And while we have made significant progress, we recognize there is still work to do.
As part of our ongoing commitment to climate mitigation and operational excellence, we have set a new goal: Reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 20% by 2030, using 2024 as our baseline.
In alignment with the GHG Protocol and the nature of our operations in the wood treating industry, we’ve chosen to focus our new GHG reduction efforts solely on fossil-based emissions, as biogenic emissions do not contribute to long-term atmospheric carbon buildup in the same way as fossil-based emissions. Although reporting of our bioenergy-related emissions will continue, they are excluded from our new reduction target and 2024 baseline.
This new target positions Koppers to strengthen operational resilience, meet growing customer and regulatory expectations, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace. By reducing carbon emissions, we’re not only minimizing environmental risks but also unlocking long-term value through increased efficiency and innovation.
This new goal and related efforts are being led by our VP of Risk Management and Sustainability, Heath Huschak, and Director of Environmental and Social Responsibility, Natalie Hinkle.
