On June 23, a group of Koppers employees from Hubbell, MI, spent the day volunteering with the

, helping improve one of the area's most well-known historic sites.

The team installed a new rail system that will be used to display mining equipment for visitors. What made the project especially meaningful was that the rail ties used for the installation were donated from the former Koppers L'Anse plant, giving new purpose to materials.

Dan Karrio, Cody Woodbury, Alex Loukus, Alex Knight, Jared Loukus, Cole Gregorie, Nate LeCronier, and Mark Karpinen.

Throughout the day, the group learned firsthand how to align rail and drive rail spikes, making for a memorable and unique experience.

After the project was complete, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association treated the team to a private tour of the historic buildings, offering a closer look at the site's rich mining history.

Way to go Hubbell team! We love to see the creative ways you give back to your community. 🚂

While dining at Little Mexico in Galesburg, Illinois, with his daughter and friends, Chris noticed a restaurant employee rush toward the back of the building. When a door opened, flames rolled out from the kitchen area. After making sure his family and other guests were safely outside, Chris grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and helped contain the grease fire before it could spread.

"The first thing that came to my mind was to get my family out, make sure everybody was out, and I ended up proceeding to grab the fire extinguisher and got it taken care of," Chris said.

Chris credits Koppers' fire extinguisher training with giving him the confidence and knowledge to respond safely in the moment.

"Honestly, I never knew how to use a fire extinguisher until my first year of being here," he said. "It kind of helped me out quite a bit to learn how to do that."

Thanks to Chris's quick actions, the fire was contained and the restaurant was able to reopen the following day. We would like to thank Chris for stepping up to help others and for putting his training into action when it mattered most.
