Koppers summer interns recently spent the day at Koppers Global Technology Center in Harmarville, Pennsylvania. 🔬🧪🚆

, organized a day of fun and learning for the interns. Dylan led a tour of the lab where the group learned all about the innovative research that occurs there! They even had the opportunity to hold two products that we sell to our customers – pitch and pavement sealer base – and saw samples of two raw materials: coal tar and creosote.

The interns were scientists for the day, getting to conduct an experiment of activated carbon water filtration! During the experiment, contaminated water was poured down a funnel lined with a filter filled with activated carbon. The contaminants stuck to the activated carbon, causing clean water to come out the bottom! 💧

The interns then blew bubbles through different wood samples to test the various porosity of wood. 

, ended the experiments by demonstrating the cool science behind liquid nitrogen by using the BET machine, which is used for surface area and micropore analysis.

The day ended with a game of jeopardy and meeting 

 for organizing an exciting day for our interns.

Pittsburgh employees from the Railroad Products and Services and Zero Harm departments pedaled to the medal to build bikes for the United Way Build A Bike event!

The purpose of this event is to foster healthy habits through physical fitness in a fun way! The event has now expanded to three different locations, over the course of three days. Volunteers from Koppers spent the day building bikes for 7- to 9-year-old children. The bikes were assembled, went through a safety check and were then delivered to local kids in need along with a bike helmet and bike lock.

Koppers employees volunteered at the Allegheny and Butler locations, with each group assembling 10 bikes each. 

, which is double the number from last year’s event!

Employees Not Tired Out: Build A Bike 2024

Over the weekend, our Stickney, Illinois, plant hosted its first ever free lawnmower exchange event by partnering with Menards and the Village of Stickney.

“Supporting the communities where we live and work is as important as the products and services we provide,” said Seth Herring, Stickney Plant Manager

The event provided dozens of community members the chance to trade in their gas-powered lawnmowers for new, battery-powered lawnmowers. Energy efficient alternatives like battery-powered lawnmowers are not only better for the environment, they are also quieter and easier to maintain!

The event was well-received with many enthusiastic community members arriving early to get their spot in line. Kevin Washington, Vice President, External Relations, commented, “The overwhelming response shows that residents are eager for new ways to meet ongoing needs with a more sustainable approach, so we were beyond excited to see the turnout.”

Real Men Read is part of the local school district’s effort to further students’ ability to read, write, speak and solve grade-level texts and tasks every day.

Employees from our Florence, South Carolina, and Rock Hill, South Carolina, plants commemorated Juneteenth through food and community service 🍗🦺

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, is a U.S. federal holiday that recognizes June 19, 1865, as the date when the news of the end of slavery reached those in Texas and other southwestern states.

Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes the importance of equal rights, while recognizing the oppression that came before and the work that remains to be done.

Employees from our Railroad Products and Services plant volunteered at the Juneteenth Community Cleanup event.

 Volunteers spent the day picking up litter and beautifying an underserved community and ended the day with a cookout for children and the unhoused.

Earlier this month, employees from our Eutawville facility volunteered at an event for Hands of a Sportsman. 🎣

Hands of a Sportsman is a non-profit that provides opportunities for individuals with challenges – both seen and unseen – to enjoy and participate in a day of outdoor activities!

Participants and their families were partnered up with volunteers, including those forming Team Koppers, to enjoy a day of fishing at Lake Wateree in South Carolina.

 The day on the lake included fishing from a boat, learning the basics of fishing and a delicious lunch!

Those who attended the event were gifted fishing poles and tackle boxes to reel in future catches. 🐟

Employees from Griffin, Georgia, volunteered at the Boy Scouts of Flint River Council’s annual Sporting Clays Invitational fundraiser. 🎯

Koppers has been a sponsor of this community event for the past several years. This year, the Griffin Office sponsored two teams of clay shooters with 

 volunteering at the event. The fundraising event includes food, shooting clays and supporting the local Boy Scouts in their mission to develop young leaders with character who will serve their community.

In March 2024, the Leesville, Louisiana, plant began peeling and drying timber for utility poles to be treated at our Somerville, Texas, facility. Last week, Koppers Utility and Industrial Products (UIP) business held a 

ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the official beginning of operations of the Leesville facility

Koppers UIP and Operations representatives, along with the local officials from the Leesville Parish Chamber of Commerce, attended the ceremony to celebrate the new facility’s official opening.

Jim Sullivan said: “The Leesville facility is a key example of how Koppers continues to optimize our operational footprint.”

We’re thrilled to have the new facility officially online and generating more than 35 construction jobs and new full-time positions!

The Zero Harm President’s Award is presented to the facilities which score the highest based on their Leading Activities and Lagging Indicators for safety, environmental and innovation.

Koppers Recovery Resources (KRR) plant, L’Anse, Michigan

! This is the second time L’Anse is receiving this honor, after having won in 2020. The L’Anse team had the highest leading indicator rate; a lagging indicator rate of 0: no days away, restricted cases, recordables, or environmental incidents; and, no Life Saving Rules deviations or OSHA recordables.

Mindy Raymond, Plant Manager said: “This award is the one that has the most meaning to me and the employees here at the plant. We are like family here and knowing that we all go home to our ‘other’ family each day is the best feeling to have. It is also great that we are given the opportunity to help others in our community with a monetary gift that they can truly use and need.”

Leroy Ball, CEO; Jim Sullivan, COO; Stephanie Apostolou, General Counsel; Joe Dowd, Vice President Zero Harm; and Travis Gross, Vice President Railroad Products and Services traveled to L’Anse to celebrate their 2024 Zero Harm President’s Award. As part of their award, L’Anse received a monetary prize to donate to the charity of their choosing. The team donated their prize money to the L’Anse Fire Department and Shantell Ekdahl Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to a local high school student pursuing a degree in the mental health or psychology field.

Two Koppers Female Leaders Earn Recognition

The team at Koppers Performance Chemicals plant in Joinville, Brazil, recently

to the local community after major flooding in the area.

In southern Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul was recently hit by devastating rains that resulted in catastrophic flooding,

 with more than 120 lives lost and many still missing. In addition, more than 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes and the number of homes, businesses, and industries who are struggling is unimaginable.

In response to the flooding, Koppers team members helped raise money, and in one morning collected enough funds to purchase and deliver

 56 blankets, 20 food baskets, 240 water bottles and 40 milk packages.

A huge thank you to our Brazilian team members for their compassion and support in helping the community after this devastating event.

 We hope that the community can rebuild and come back stronger than ever. ❤️

Koppers Global Technology Center (KGTC) and Pittsburgh employees recently brought their kids to work at our KGTC Harmarville facility.

 More than 30 Koppers kids were in attendance and had an educational, exciting day of fun for Take your Kids to Work Day!

On April 20th, 2024, a severe storm passed through South Rock Hill in communities where many Rock Hill plant employees reside. ⛈️

Rock Hill Community Fridge and Farmacy put out a call to the community

 for things in need and hot meals for those affected. 

Koppers Rock Hill plant answered the call and provided

 60 non-perishable bags, 12 female hygiene bags, and 12 male hygiene bags, and assisted with unloading donations. 🤝❤️

For the third year in a row, the Madison team participated in the City of Madison Earth Day Challenge.

They partnered with the City of Madison Parks and had a clean-up day at Madison's Vilas Beach Park for Earth Day where they assisted in trash pickups, raking, and weeding around the park. 🚮

The Domino team partnered with Golden Villa Nursing home where they planted trees and hung bird feeders with the nursing home residents, family, and friends to celebrate Earth Day. 🐤

The Griffin team had 40 employees help with a beehive dedication and a roadside clean-up. The group also worked without the lights on in the office to celebrate Earth Day. 🍯🧹

During the beehive dedication, the team planted wildflowers to support the bees and cleaned up trash and debris along Everee Inn Road. The team also worked without office lights (where it was safe) to help reduce energy consumption.

To celebrate Earth Day, the Brazil team hosted an educational Wood Preservation Event for their customers. 🌿

The Wood Preservation Event provided further education to our customers on the latest developments in the treating industry. With 140 participants from 50 different treatment plants in attendance, the event was a huge success!

Koppers 2024 Preserving the Earth Celebrations Have Begun!

On April 18th, employees from Koppers Pittsburgh IT team attended the CIO (Chief Information Officer) of the Year Awards through Pittsburgh Technology Council. 🏆🌐

 recognizes and honors the accomplishments of Southwestern PA's most hardworking CIOs, CISOs, Tech Trailblazers, and Rising Stars.

This year, there were seven different categories of finalists

 from companies of all sizes, non-profits, and government/higher education institutions, 

with an individual award for each category. 

 has worked at Koppers for three years and currently leads the digital transformation team at Koppers where he is involved in project inception, requirements elicitation, design, solution implementation and support and monitoring.

2. Frank Pascoe: Tech Trailblazer Finalist

 started as a process control engineer and then switched to the IT department, where he learned a lot about networking and server management. He is now developing the foundational elements for Industry 4.0 and AI applications and is dedicated to using technology to improve efficiency, quality, and safety of our operations.

3. Pete Zwieryznski: CISO – Terabyte Finalist

 has led numerous global initiatives and created and maintained strategic partnerships in his ongoing efforts to ensure the resiliency and continuity of the business as it navigates through the ever-changing cyber threat landscape.

As Vice President of global IT operations and a member of the Leadership Council at Koppers, 

 uses his 25 years of IT-related experiences to develop a digital strategy focused on innovation and emerging technologies. Under Tushar’s guidance, Koppers IT department launched a Digital Transformation program about 18 months back and have since successfully implemented 40+ projects using various emerging technologies.
