Attachment
Maximum adhesion or secure attachment of all components in the roofing assembly is necessary for satisfactory long-term performance of the roofing membrane. Membrane attachment shall be as stated in the job specification, building codes, or building insurance requirements, but as a minimum requirement, bitumen adhesive and/or fastener quantities specified must be capable of passing a minimum uplift resistance of 40 pounds per square foot (psf) (1915Pa).

When building code requirements dictate a higher uplift resistance than our minimum requirement, additional fasteners may be required over and above the quantities described in the roofing specifications.

When steep asphalt is used to adhere insulations to concrete decks, the deck shall first be primed with Koppers High-Pen Primer 452 at a rate of one-half to one gallon per 100 square feet (1.9 to 3.8L/9.3m2). Primer must be dry without puddling prior to installation of felts or insulation.

When coal tar is used to adhere insulation to structural poured concrete decks, priming is generally not required. However, if adhesion is not satisfactory, priming will be necessary.

When nails or fasteners are used, they must be nailed through disks or have sufficiently large heads to prevent fracture or puncture through the base sheet, roofing felts or insulation facer and have sufficient holding power to prevent backout.

Mechanical fastening of the first layer of insulation to metal decks is required for Koppers warranted systems. Currently, Factory Mutual recommends mechanical fastening of the first layer of board type insulation to a metal deck.

The FM Approval Guide should be consulted for specific details on fasteners and required application procedures.

Refer to the insulation manufacturer’s literature for requirements.

Cold applied adhesives are not acceptable for attaching insulation or vapor retarders.

Koppers will not be responsible for any damage caused by or the result of unsatisfactory attachment.
