Cold Weather Summary
  1. Keep materials dry.
  2. After completing roof sections on a daily basis, ensure water-stops and tie-ins are properly installed and watertight.
  3. Insulate pipes, luggers, bitumen dispensers and mop buckets.
  4. Maintain kettle as full as possible at appropriate temperatures, thus minimizing temperature loss.
  5. Keep kettle as close as possible to the point-of-application of the roofing system.
  6. Do not overheat bitumen in kettle to achieve high point-of-application temperature. Overheating may have a detrimental effect on the bitumen’s waterproofing ability.
  7. Make every effort to keep point-of-application temperature at the upper half of the EVT range, which permits better flow of bitumen.
  8. Apply or roll in the felts as close as possible behind the application of the hot bitumen.
  9. Embed felts into hot bitumen immediately.
  10. Roofing applicators should be alerted of possible safety hazards due to bulky clothing and icy (slippery) walking surfaces.
  11. Do not store materials on deck in high piles as this creates wind and snow dams.
  12. Maintain good housekeeping on roof deck at all times especially in cold weather periods.
  13. If, after using precautions to achieve effective point-of-application temperatures, they cannot be maintained, the job should be shut down until conditions improve.
