Cold Weather Application
When roofing is applied in cold weather, special precautions must be taken to ensure the satisfactory performance of the finished roof.

Before applying roofing, moisture, ice, snow, frost, surface water, etc. must be removed from the deck and the deck allowed to dry.

Hot applied bitumens tend to congeal rapidly in cold weather. Extra care must be taken to set insulation or roofing as quickly as possible while the bitumen is still within the "point of application" temperature guidelines.

When temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) felt must be embedded in bitumen while it is still hot and broomed or pressed in immediately with solid pressure to ensure necessary embedment into bitumen.

Do not heat bitumens above the maximum temperature limit listed previously to compensate for rapid chilling. Insulated containers and equipment, along with carefully timed material delivery methods, must be employed.

NOTE: Bitumen temperatures below those recommended at the “point of application” can result in heavy interply quantities which in turn can potentially contribute to the cause of membrane slippage and bitumen migration.
