The Roanoke plant was built in 1955 to replace the Norfolk and Western treating plant in Radford, Virginia. The plant site was formerly a tomato and strawberry farm. The picturesque Roanoke River borders the plant property. The Roanoke plant has achieved an exceptional safety record since operation began. No accidents occurred during a 10-year period from 1965 to 1975. One million railroad ties per year are supplied to the Norfolk Southern and other plant customers.
