Rick Harris Named Quality
Manager for Koppers Railroad & Utility Products Division
Oct. 25, 1999, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Richard
A. Harris has been promoted to the position of quality manger for
the Railroad and Utility Products Division of Koppers.
He joined
Koppers in 1996 with the company's acquisition of Aristech's
coal tar plant in Clairton, PA, and served as product manager for
Koppers' Carbon Materials and Chemicals Division. In his new
role,
Harris will assume responsibility for product quality to include
testing, customer service, training and the development of plant
and customer quality manuals and procedures. A graduate of Indiana
University in Bloomington, he joined U.S. Steel in 1974 at the
company's Gary Works. In 1997, Harris took
a leave of absence and spent four years as district director for
Indiana Congressman Floyd J. Fithian. On his return to U.S. Steel,
Harris held management positions in quality control, operations,
technical services and sales. Following U.S. Steel's spin-off of
its former chemical division into Aristech, Harris spent 10 years
in product management and environmental compliance.
A resident
of Mt. Lebanon, PA, Harris is a member of the American Wood Preservers
Association and Railway Tie Association.
Koppers is a global integrated
producer of carbon compounds and treated wood products for use
in a variety of markets, including
the railroad, aluminum, chemical and steel industries. The company
operates 22 facilities in the United States and an additional 13
facilities in the South Pacific, primarily Australia and New Zealand.
The company also maintains indirect ownership interests in an additional
U.S. facility through its domestic joint venture KSA and five facilities
overseas (one in Denmark and four in the United Kingdom) through
its Danish joint venture Tarconord A/S. Additionally, earlier this
year, the company entered into a joint venture agreement with Tangshan
Iron & Steel Co. ("TISCO") to rehabilitate and operate
a coal tar distillation facility in China; the joint venture is
60 percent owned by the company. Koppers' stock is shared by a
large number of management investors and by majority equity owner,
Saratoga Partners of New York City.
