Koppers Elects New Director

Feb. 26, 1999, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Koppers announced today that David M. Hillenbrand has joined its Board of Directors, effective immediately.

David Hillenbrand is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bayer Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of Bayer AG (Germany). After joining Bayer AG in 1976 at the company's headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany, he served in various positions with Bayer AG, Mobay Chemical Corporation, Miles, Inc. and Bayer Corporation, both in the United States and Germany.

"Dr. Hillenbrand's many accomplishments and experience will provide a unique perspective which will be of great value to Koppers," said Koppers Board Chairman, Robert K. Wagner. "We are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Hillenbrand join the Koppers Board."

Dr. Hillenbrand, an American citizen, was born in Bremen, Germany in 1947. Dr. Hillenbrand has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Duke University, Durham, N.C. and Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in Germanics from the University of Washington, Seattle. He is married and has two sons.

Dr. Hillenbrand is a member of the Board of Directors of Bayer Inc. and Agfa Inc. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Canadian Chemical Producers Association (CCPA) and chairs the CCPA Public Affairs Committee. Dr. Hillenbrand is also a member of the Board of the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce Inc.

Koppers, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a leading integrated producer of carbon compounds, chemicals, and treated wood products for use in a variety of markets including the chemical, railroad, utility, wood preserving, rubber, aluminum, and steel industries. Koppers operates 21 domestic and 14 Australian and Pacific Rim facilities and serves European markets through its Tarconord joint venture in Denmark. On a combined basis, 1998 sales were approximately $700 million. The Company's stock is held by a large number of management investors and by majority equity owner Saratoga Partners of New York City.
