Koppers Inc. is one of
America’s 16 safest companies
Occupational Hazards Magazine honors Koppers for its commitment
to employee safety
PITTSBURGH, September 16, 2003 — Koppers
Inc. has been named one of the Safest Companies in America by Occupational
Hazards ( 2003_OH_Reprint.pdf ),
a leading magazine of safety, health and loss prevention.
Koppers, a global integrated producer of carbon
materials and treated wood products, is one of just 16 companies
to earn
the honor for
2003, joining such well-known names as CSX Transportation, DuPont
and Motorola.
Occupational Hazards says it honored Koppers
because the Pittsburgh-based private company is actively committed
to a
level of employee safety
and health that goes beyond compliance with government standards.
Many
of the 38 Koppers facilities around the world operate with a relatively
small work force, says Randy Collins, Koppers vice
president for safety, health and environmental affairs. “We
have developed a caring work force and family culture where we
know our workmates and their families," he says. “We
are encouraging an environment where people want to work safely
for the sake of their coworkers, their families and themselves.”
The
Occupational Hazards safety recognition is not the first for Koppers.
Earlier this year, the National Safety Council (NSC) honored
12 Koppers facilities with its Green Cross Safety Excellence Achievement
Award for efforts to build a workplace culture and environment
that focuses on safety.
Occupational Hazards says recommendations
by industry professionals; recognition by industry associations,
state and local agencies;
participation in OSHA programs; and the magazine’s own research
led it to select its 2003 roster of safest companies.
In addition to Koppers, the Safest Companies
list includes: Bechtel Group Inc., Bon L Manufacturing, CF Industries
Inc., CSX Transportation,
DaimlerChrysler, DuPont, ExxonMobile Chemical, Haynes International
Inc., Johnson & Johnson, MeadWestvaco Corp., Motorola Inc.,
National Gypsum, Pactiv Corp., Quincy Compressor and the Salt
River Project.
