January 13, 2003, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — The National Safety Council (NSC) has honored 12 operations of Koppers Industries with its NSC Green Cross Safety Excellence Achievement Award. Koppers Industries, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pa., is a globally integrated producer of carbon compounds and treated wood products used in a variety of industries.

“We commend our employees for focusing their attention on safe work practices,” said Randall D. Collins, Vice President, Safety, Health & Environmental Affairs for Koppers. “These plants have created a safety climate where workers care about each other’s well being, and these awards are a reflection of our company’s commitment to continuous safety improvement.”

The NSC Excellence Achievement Award Program recognizes companies that implement safety processes or systems. Rather than tracking safety statistics that achieve a predetermined target of accident-free days, the award honors efforts to build a workplace culture and environment that focuses on safety.

These Koppers locations earned the award:

Alorton, Ill.
Clairton, Pa.
Green Spring, W. Va.
Grenada, Miss.

Guthrie, Ky.
Harmarville, Pa.
Portland, Ore.
Roanoke Valley, Va.

Superior, Wis.
Denver, Colo.
North Little Rock, Ark.
Florence, S.C.

The National Safety Council, founded in 1913, is the nation's leading advocate for safety and health - at home, on the road, in the workplace, and in the community.
