Announcement
May 31, 2000, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Koppers
Industries has announced that its European operations will be led
by David Whittle, PhD., through Koppers Europe ApS, a Danish company.
Dr. Whittle has been elected Vice President, European Operations
of Koppers and assumes responsibility for the activities of three
coal tar distillation facilities (two in the United Kingdom, one
in Denmark), one chemical operation (United Kingdom) and a road
transport company (United Kingdom). Koppers Europe ApS was formed
on May 12, 2000 as a result of the acquisition of 100% of the stock
of Tarconord A/S by Koppers from its former Danish partner, Tarco
A/S. Koppers and Tarco A/S had jointly owned Tarconord A/S since
1987 and Bitmac, Ltd. indirectly since 1996.
Dr. Whittle is married
with 3 children and lives in Scunthorpe, England. He pursued his
education at Liverpool Polytechnic and
completed his post graduate education at the University of Liverpool,
earning the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1970. Dr. Whittle's
career experience includes management positions with Imperial Chemical
Industries and British Steel (now Corus Group, PLC) before joining
Bitmac Ltd. in 1983 becoming its Managing Director and Chief Executive
Officer in 1986. He is active in industry associations and has
served as past President of the International Tar Association and
Lincolnshire Iron & Steel Institute, and is President-elect
of the Coke Oven Managers' Association.

wood preserving and chemical industries uniquely qualify him to
direct Koppers operations and future growth throughout the whole
of Europe."
Koppers is a global integrated producer of carbon
compounds and treated wood products for use in a variety of markets,
including
the railroad, aluminum, chemical and steel industries. Including
Tarconord and Bitmac, the Company operates 39 facilities in the
United States, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific (primarily
Australia and New Zealand), Denmark and the United Kingdom. The
Company also maintains an indirect ownership interest in a concrete
rail tie facility in the United States through its domestic joint
venture KSA. Additionally, in March 1999 the Company entered into
a joint venture agreement with Tangshan Iron & Steel Co. ("TISCO")
to operate a tar distillation facility in China; that joint venture
is 60% owned by the Company. The Company's stock is shared by a
large number of management investors and by majority equity owner,
Saratoga Partners of New York City.
