Koppers Coal Tar Distillates, in the form of creosote, have become
a cost efficient and integral part of our nation’s transportation
industry. Crossties pressure treated with creosote provide
the railroad industry with a proven and economical product
with a service life of well over 40 years.
Koppers creosote is also widely used in the utility
pole and piling business due to its time-tested wood preserving
performance.
Another distillate form, carbon black feedstock,
is a raw material used in the production of rubber giving it the
desired physical properties – primarily in automobile tires.
Distillates are made up of crude coke oven tar components, which
are produced during the high temperature coking of bituminous
coal. They boil between 100°C and 400°C during the distillation
process to produce carbon pitch. Refined chemical oil (RCO) distills
between 210°C and 315°C. The distillates that distill
above 315°C are high molecular weight aromatic hydrocarbons
(middle and heavy distillates). The RCO is further refined by
distilling to obtain naphthalene leaving a lightweight, low naphthalene
material (NSR). This material is blended with the heavier distillates
to produce AWPA specification creosotes. The balance of the heavier
distillates is used as feedstock in the production of carbon
black feedstock.
Creosote:
- Environmentally friendly, naturally derived wood preservative
- Extends the useful life of timber products
- Conserves our natural resources
- 150 years of use as a wood preservative
- Knowledgeable, experienced technical assistance.
- Professional logistics support
Carbon Black Feedstock:
- An amorphous form of carbon produced by incomplete burning
of hydrocarbon materials
- Major component used in the production of tires
- Also used by the pigment, paint and rubber industries.
- Longevity/proven reliability
- Life cycle cost benefits
- Product consistency
- AWPA specifications
- Alternative preservatives do not have performance history
