Susquehanna Plant

The co-generation plant was built in 1986 to handle used ties and poles sent in for disposal from Conrail and various utility companies. The used ties and poles are burned to co-generate power sold to Pennsylvania Power and Light (PP&L). The system generates around 54 million kilowatts of power per year. Steam from the plant is sent to the adjoining Koppers wood treating plant to run the treating process for new ties.

In 2001, Koppers installed a debris conveyor system to handle small pieces of wood. This system enables Koppers to handle the smaller pieces that break off the whole ties received in the plant. In 2002, the Susquehanna plant received an Environmental Stewardship award for the source reduction aspects of this system.
