Roanoke Plant
The Roanoke plant was built in 1955 to replace the Norfolk and Western treating plant in Radford, Virginia. The plant site was formerly a tomato and strawberry farm. The picturesque Roanoke River borders the plant property. The Roanoke plant has achieved an exceptional safety record since operation began. No accidents occurred during a 10-year period from 1965 to 1975. This safety tradition and culture has continued with the presentation of the 4th “Director’s Award of Safety Excellence” this year. An effective Community Advisory Panel has strengthened the ties with the community and the neighbors. The plant has earned the “Environmental Compliance Award” 3 of the last 4 years. One million railroad ties per year are supplied to the Norfolk Southern and other plant customers.
